I encourage my outgoing kindergarten friends to keep up their new skills for first grade by doing the following:
* read a book every day and talk about it * practice addition/subtraction flashcards or questions (facts 0-20) * write in a journal or send letters to family/friends * play (card, board, verbal, computer) games that practice letter sounds, short vowel sounds, spelling, and rhyming. * move - run, hop, skip, play, dance * create - draw, sculpt, write, sing * iReady Reading and iReady Math will be available until June 30, 2020. * RazKids Reading will be available until August 22, 2020. * Lexia will be available until August 31, 2020. Additional Activities: Reading Activities *Read a story and do the following: -Draw a picture of the main characters -Draw a picture of the beginning, middle and end of the story -Write a sentence to match your drawing -Write a new ending to the story -Write a question about the story and answer your question *practice writing your letters with chalk, paintbrush and water, shaving cream, markers, or crayons. *Read words around your house - make sure someone is with you! -Challenge yourself daily: 10 words, 15 words, 20 words, ect… *Read, read, read!!! Writing Activities *Write 10 words that you have found around your house on a piece of paper and then write a sentence using some of those words. *Write a story about summer. *Write as many words as you can for each word families: AN, AT, AG, ET, EN, IT, IG, IN, OG, OT, UT, UG *Write a joke and tell it to someone. *Write a recipe to share with someone. *Write a cartoon strip. *Write how to do something, include the steps. *Write a thank you card to someone. Math *Practice writing your numbers 1 - 100. Challenge: write them in a pattern with 2 colors! *Practice writing your numbers by 10’s to 100. *Practice writing your number by 5’s to 100. *Using legos or blocks, build a house or a barn, count how many blocks you used. *Measure how many legos/blocks it would take to go from your bedroom to the kitchen - count the blocks. *Measure (using a tape measure, blocks, yardstick) each person in your family. -Who is the tallest? -Who is the shortest? *Count how many pairs of shoes are in your house. -Using number of shoes, write to 20 by 2’s Example: 2,4,... *Count how many pieces of fruit are in your house. Make 2 addition or 2 subtraction sentences using the fruit. Example: 2 oranges and 1 lemon = 3 fruit OR 2 oranges - 1 lemon = 1 fruit Science/Social Studies *Make a map of your house. -Hide a treasure “toy, fruit snack, candy, etc.” -Give directions/drawings to find the treasure. *Go on a walk and count how many living things you see! *Build your own earthworm house. In a jar: Dirt, coffee grounds, water, leaves, sticks AND An earthworm *Plant some seeds and watch how they grow. These are great ideas to keep going over the summer! |
